Review: Waddy Wachtel Band 8/6/07

Review by Nina:

After not being at The Joint for two weeks, the Waddy Wachtel Band came back in full rockin' force last night 8/6/07 - and they'd worked up some new songs for us! They also brought back an oldie but goodie the band hasn't done for a long time.

The new songs?
"Tomorrow Never Knows" by the Beatles. Yes, the set list is correct - they played it in both sets. Brett showed us another side of his vocal abilities by crooning/rocking through this song with a haunting quality.
"I Shall be Released" by Bob Dylan. Seems like a strange song for a rockin' band to perform, but Jamie took on the challenging vocals and showed us how an exquisite rock voice could wail through such a beautiful song.

The oldie but goodie?
"Paint it Black" by the Stones. WWB hasn't performed this song since Terry Reid was with the band, but once again Jamie picked up the pieces and brought life back into it.

Waddy's shining moments were so many it's hard to list them all, but it's always such a pleasure to hear him sing "Lawyers, Guns and Money." What a wonderful tribute to his pal Warren Zevon. Waddy played three guitar solos last night that stood out to me and kept me riveted on him and his fingers. He really wailed on "Live Wire", "C'mon Everybody" and finished with a burning solo on the final song of the night "Sin City".

Keith got to sing a song that's an oldie but goodie for him "Just Like Me." Yes, Keith was in Paul Revere and the Raiders.

Phil's hair was blowing wildly from the wind of his fan, and his hands flew those drum sticks around so fast you could barely see them. Rick took his comfortable pose at the back of the stage with a grin and let loose thumping those bass strings.

Here's the set list:

1st Set:
"Tomorrow Never Knows" (Beatles) Brett Tuggle lead vocals
"Girl's Got Rhythm" (AC/DC) Jamie Savko lead vocals
"Paint it Black" (Stones) Jamie lead vocals

"Poor Poor Pitiful Me" (Warren Zevon) Keith Allison lead vocals
"Just Like Me" (Paul Revere & the Raiders) Keith lead vocals
"Ohio" (Neil Young) Waddy, Jamie, Brett vocal harmonies
"All Down the Line" (Stones) Jamie lead vocals

2nd set:
"I am the Walrus" (Beatles) Brett lead vocals
"Honky Tonk Woman" (Stones) Jamie lead vocals
"Eight Miles High" (Byrds) Waddy, Jamie, Brett vocal harmonies
"I Shall be Released" (Bob Dylan) Jamie lead vocals
"Live Wire" (AC/DC) Brett lead vocals
"Cripple Creek" (the Band) Keith lead vocals
"C'mon Everybody" (Eddie Cochran) Keith lead vocals
"Tomorrow Never Knows" (Beatles) Brett lead vocals
"Sin City" (AC/DC) Jamie lead vocals

Hey, C'mon Everybody - WWB is going to rock The Joint again this Friday night 8/10. So, those of you who haven't been able to make it down on a Monday night can now rock with the rest of us on a weekend. Yup - many of us will go see WWB both nights - they're that GOOD! Unlike some bands who play the same songs in the same order every gig, we never know what new gems WWB will come up with. And we never know which other performers might show up and sit in with them.

Oh.... And thanks to all the wonderful people who come and rock with WWB - the guys in the band send their love.

Next gig - Monday 8/20 at The Joint. Brett Tuggle will be back kicking up a storm.

Review: Waddy Wachtel Band at The Joint 8/20/07

Review by Nina:

The entire WWB band was at The Joint last night 8/20, and the energy was magical. Waddy Wachtel, Brett Tuggle, Jamie Savko, Rick Rosas and Phil Jones reminded us all what rock 'n' roll is all about. It was an incredible night!

It's so great they started off the night with "Happy" - yeah, we were all happy! What a refreshing way to start off the week. They then blasted through the first set with each of the guys taking turns on lead vocals. It was so exciting to watch and hear each of them sing individually then break into mind-blowing harmonies - and when Waddy played a solo it takes you to whole new places. All the while, Rick and Phil are solid as rocks. Most bands just have one lead singer, but WWB has three!!!!! And they're all fantastic.

We missed Keith Allison at the gig, but a friend of Rick's named Mark Guerrero sang "Slow Down" in the 2nd set. Another great vocalist! Mark Guerrero can be found at his web site: http://www.markguerrero.net/

And another singer was lurking around in the back - Johnny Rivers. He didn't perform with the band last night (although he does sit in with them occasionally), but he just watched with a big smile on his face.

By the second set we were all feeling even perkier than we were at the beginning of the night. It's amazing how WWB's music adds more energy to life - Rock cures all ills! Brett made us all drift away on a delightful cloud with his vocals on "Tomorrow Never Knows" and Waddy brought on a sparkling spring shower with his guitar solos. The vocal harmonies in "Eight Miles High" were exquisite. The blending of Waddy's, Brett's and Jamie's voices are reaching new levels - what perfection.

Just a couple of other notes..... Jamie had such an angelic quality to his voice on "I Shall Be Released", and Waddy and Brett showed they can sing perfectly balanced harmonies even on the "softer" songs. Brett always thrills with his "Live Wire" vocals/performance, and Waddy plays the shit out of his guitar on the solos in that song. Ending the night, Jamie cast off the mike stand, moved to the front of the stage, and took us all to "Sin City" - we went willingly! :-D When the band quieted down for Waddy's solo in that song, the notes he played sailed throughout the whole room and settled somewhere in our {sin-full) hearts.

Set List:
1st set:
"Happy" (Stones) Waddy Wachtel lead vocals
"Shot Down in Flames" (AC/DC) Jamie Savko lead vocals
"Revolution" (Beatles) Brett Tuggle lead vocals
"The Rover" (Led Zep) Jamie lead vocals
"Like a Rolling Stone" (Bob Dylan) Waddy lead vocals
"All Down the Line" (Stones) Jamie lead vocals
"What's Next to the Moon" (Led Zep) Brett lead vocals
"I am the Walrus" (Beatles) Brett lead vocals

2nd set:
"Tomorrow Never Knows" (Beatles) Brett lead vocals
"Eight Miles High" (Byrds) Waddy, Jamie and Brett vocal harmonies
"Girl's Got Rhythm" (AC/DC) Jamie lead vocals
"Slow Down" (Beatles) Mark Guerrero (guest singer) lead vocals
"Lawyers, Guns and Money" (Warren Zevon) Waddy lead vocals
"I Shall Be Released" (Bob Dylan) Jamie lead vocals
"Live Wire" (AC/DC) Brett lead vocals
"Bitch" (Stones) Jamie lead vocals
"Sin City" (AC/DC) Jamie lead vocals

And...... My thanks to all the new dancin' girls who showed up last night. It was so much fun being surrounded by friends - old and new - who can let their hair down and totally get into the music. And we danced! I love you all, and so do the guys in the band. They send love, warmth and appreciation to all of you........ From the bottom of their rockin' hearts.

WWB will be rockin' The Joint again next Monday night 8/27 after Waddy and Brett return from a gig with Stevie Nicks on Friday night in Atlantic City. So, you'd better take care of yourselves this week and make sure you're able to get on down to TJ on Monday. Warning: WWB is totally addictive - once you try it you can't stop coming back for more!

Be well, rockers, and hope to see all of you at TJ when you're in town.

Review: Waddy Wachtel Band 8/27/07

Review by Nina:

Waddy Wachtel, Brett Tuggle, Jamie Savko, Rick Rosas, Phil Jones and Keith Allison thrilled us all at The Joint last night - Monday 8/27. Every song was soooo good and rocked with perfection that I can't pick out a single one to say was any better than all the rest. Each one of the guys in the Waddy Wachtel Band were so full of energy and having such a great time up there that we couldn't sit still!

Special note: It was Keith Allison's B-Day - "Happy B-Day, Keith!" we all yelled. Keith has been rockin' with the band since they started doing Monday nights at The Joint, about 7 years ago. He was a member of Paul Revere and the Raiders (remember them?) and was actively involved in a TV show featuring them called "What's Happening?". He was so cute he earned the nickname "Paul" (after Paul McCartney). Keith never stopped rockin', and he can sure tell some great stories about who he's played with in the past. Recently he had a small role in the movie "Gods and Generals". We want to give Keith special appreciation for showing us that Rock 'n' Roll not only keeps you young, but it never leaves your heart! What a great and talented guy!

So, without further ado, here's the set list:

2nd set:

A big thank you to the guys in the band and the audience for making it another night of the best Rock on the planet. You just can't find a group of guys like WWB - each with such a professional and all-encompassing history anywhere. And I don't think there's a club anywhere that has such an incredible and rockin' audience.

YES, WWB will be at The Joint rockin' next Monday 9/3. See ya all there!
