Reviews and News - December 2010

Review: Waddy Wachtel Band 12/17/10

Note from Nina:

Wow! Everyone had a great time at the Waddy Wachtel Band Special Holiday Show at The Joint Friday night December 17, 2010.
Thank you all for coming - so many of you wonderful Rockers - to enjoy the music and share the holiday glow with our fantastic band. You gave them all BIG smiles!!

Waddy Wachtel, Brett Tuggle, Jamie Savko, Al Ortiz, Jimmy Paxson, Keith Allison and Blondie Chaplin say:
“HAPPY HOLIDAYS! We love you and will see you next year!”
The best of holiday wishes also from Phil Jones, Rick Rosas and Bernard Fowler who couldn’t be with us for the gig - but want to say they love you and will be rockin’ with us in 2011.

Here’s some notes about the Friday night gig:

Yessss.......... It was a special treat for one and all.
WWB performed 2 loooong sets - what a delight! Our Monday night gigs were cut a little short recently due to a neighbor’s complaints (Bah, Humbug!) so we didn’t get as many tunes.
On Friday...... Each of the sets consisted of 11 great songs. Can’t get enough of WWB!!!!

In addition to the songs we love to hear WWB play, they also added 5 new tunes they hadn’t played for us before. So, I’ll tell you about them.......

“Finishing Touches” is a song from Warren Zevon’s 1991 album Mr. Bad Example. Waddy Wachtel - long time friend of Zevon and heavily involved in Zevon’s albums and live performances - played guitar, sang harmony vocals and produced that song on the album. Waddy did a fantastic job of singing lead vocals and playing electrifying solos on that tune at our Friday night gig. After the song Waddy said: “Thank you, Zev. We miss you, buddy!” Thank YOU, Waddy!

“Love Hungry Man” is from the AC/DC 1979 album Highway To Hell. Bon Scott era. Waddy picked this tune for Jamie Savko to sing lead vocals on, and Jamie sang it perfectly. What a voice! Jamie’s the only one I’ve heard who can sing like Bon on these AC/DC tunes. It was a great thrill for all of us to hear Jamie sail through that song.

“Only You Know And I Know” is from the 1970 Dave Mason album Alone Together. It was released as a single that same year and burned up the charts. It was known as a hit for Delaney & Bonnie. It was a perfect addition for Keith Allison to sing Friday night. He rocked through it - just like he does with so many other tunes. Keith then gave us “Run Run Rudolph” - our annual WWB Holiday song. Lovin' it all from Keith!

“Oh Darling” is from the Beatles 1969 album Abbey Road. Brett Tuggle always does an incredible job singing lead vocals on Beatles tunes. Brett has been playing and singing Beatles songs since he was...... for a long time! Not many people know this, but Brett had a Beatles tribute band in 1995 called 4 Lads From The Valley and played many local gigs in Los Angeles. Brett wails on all the Beatles songs with WWB...... he wails on every song!

“Sail On Sailor” is from the Beach Boys 1973 album Holland. Some of you Blondie Chaplin fans might know that the Beach Boys couldn’t find a voice among them who could do justice to the song on the album, so they had Blondie sing the lead vocals. Yes, that’s him singing lead on the record. When Waddy introduced the song Friday night, he said: “There’s no one who can sing this song like Blondie.” What a wonderful surprise and treat for all of us!

If you missed this WWB gig, I’m sure you’re wishing you were there.
WWB will be back to rock it up for us in 2011. Yes, they will!!!! Can’t stop rockin’ ‘n’ rollin’.
