Reviews and News - December 2012

Review: Waddy Wachtel Band 12/22/12 AND next gig 1/19/13

Note from Nina:

YES........... It was a great Rockin' Holiday party with the Waddy Wachtel Band at The Joint in Los Angeles Saturday night, December 22, 2012!

YES......... The next Waddy Wachtel Band gig has been confirmed for Saturday, January 19, 2013 at The Joint in Los Angeles! Yay! I'll get you more info on that show later, but make your plans to join us now, okay? Okay!

As for what transpired on 12/22/12.......
By the time Waddy Wachtel, Phil Jones, Rick Rosas and Jamie Savko hit the stage for the first song of the night, the beautiful Joint was filled with beautiful people - rockers one and all - smiling and sharing Holiday warmth. Then the Rock 'n' Roll began!

When WWB blasted into "Substitute" it was hard to believe there were just 4 guys on that stage - Waddy, Phil, Rick and Jamie. It was a full, rich, room-filling blast of rockin' bliss! Only the best dudes can carry off a song like that with only guitar, drums and bass. We got 'em! Add Jamie's flawless vocals - Bliss for sure!

Jason Sinay (guitar) and Ron Dziubla (saxophone) joined the band for the second song "If You Can't Rock Me." There was no doubt about it - WWB CAN rock us! And they always do.

The first set was filled with 11 incredible songs performed to perfection. There's no way to express the excitement and electricity of the music in words - if you were there you know what I mean. If you weren't there...... Poor you! I'll tell you some stuff that went on.

Jason Sinay has joined WWB many times in the past for these shows, and it was great having him playing guitar and singing. He sang lead vocals on "Like A Hurricane" and "Powderfinger." Everyone loved it!

Blondie Chaplin was happy to be back with WWB, and we were glad to have him. After giving an exceptional lead vocal on "Lawyers, Guns and Money" he sang a song very familiar to him and us: "Sail On Sailor" Blondie actually sang the lead vocal on that Beach Boys recording. The Beach Boys weren't happy with any of their vocals on it, so they asked Blondie to sing it. Good decision!

Ron Dziubla played saxophone with WWB for the first time at the last gig on 11/24/12. He did a great job, and Waddy asked him to return. What else can Ron play? Hmmmmm. Well, he not only played alto and baritone sax, but also showed he can get down on guitar as well. What else? Waddy had a great idea of adding flute to "Ruby Tuesday" - so Ron did and nailed it!

Closing the first set, WWB did a song they hadn't done for us before "When the Levee Breaks." Wow! Led Zeppelin recorded this song written by Kansas Joe McCoy and Memphis Minnie in 1929. They made this acoustic blues song rock, and so did WWB. Jamie wails on lead vocals on all the Zep songs, and was fantastic on this one. Also...... Waddy brought out his Fender Telecaster (the first time he's used it at a WWB gig) and played a mean slide guitar!

After a short break......
The second set was as spectacular as the first.
WWB got us high - "Eight Miles High"!!!! Waddy's guitar solos on this are something everyone should get a chance to hear in their lifetime - awe inspiring! An aspiring guitarist said: "Thanks for the guitar lesson, Waddy!" Rick plays some incredible bass licks on that too. And not to leave out..... Jamie and Waddy perfect harmony vocals. Phil rocks the roof off on drums!

More great tunes followed, then.......
An old friend came on stage to join in singing harmonies on "Honky Tonk Women." Ivan Neville! Ivan is a very well-respected and talented performer. He's put out his own solo albums, has a band called Dumpstaphunk and played in the X-Pensive Winos with Waddy. Ivan sang lead vocals on the next song "Bad Boy." You'd know the song from the lyric "Now, junior, behave yourself." It was written by Larry Williams and later recorded by The Beatles. It was so nice having Ivan up there rockin' for us!

What a totally fulfilling night of Rockin' it was! It made the Holidays brighter for all of us! Thank all of you who came to share in it with us. Waddy and the guys were so happy you came. If you couldn't make it, come on January 19. I promise you'll be glad you did.
Happy New Year!!!!!!
