Review: Waddy Wachtel Band at The Joint 2/8/10

Note from Nina:

First......... upcoming Waddy Wachtel Band gigs at The Joint:
February 15, 2010
February 22, 2010

Next........ Here’s a bit of info about the fantastic time we all had at The Joint on 2/8/10:

The players:
Waddy Wachtel - Lead Guitar, Vocals
Phil Jones - Drums
Rick Rosas - Bass
Jamie Savko - Vocals, Percussion
Keith Allison - Regular Guest - Vocals, Guitar
Peter Asher - Special Guest - Vocals, Guitar
Steve Ferrone - Special Guest - Drums

As you all know, we’ve got some of the best performers in the world up there on the stage on Monday nights at The Joint - the guys in the Waddy Wachtel Band. These guys refuse to give less than 1000% any time they perform, and it’s a real thrill to hear them sounding just as fantastic now as they did years ago. True professionals - and that shows in every tune they do. If you’ve seen them....... You KNOW!!!!!!

And because they’re so amazing......... Many special guests have shown up on Mondays to share that stage with them. On the 8th we got not only the spectacular Waddy Wachtel Band, but 2 other special guests.

Peter Asher was a real treat - singing perfect harmonic vocals with Waddy Wachtel and playing his Gibson “John Lennon reissue” acoustic/electric guitar. Waddy played his J-45 Gibson acoustic/electric guitar with him on their first tune “I Go To Pieces,” which was a hit record for Peter Asher and Gordon Waller as Peter And Gordon in the late 60’s. They did two more tunes together with Waddy back on his Les Paul (check the set list below) and everyone was mesmerized by how great they were.
Peter Asher has been a huge influence in the music world for many years. He’s not only a wonderful singer and guitarist, but he took charge of the Beatles’ Apple Records A&R deprtment in the late 60’s after Peter And Gordon disbanded. He signed James Taylor to Apple Records, and went on to produce and perform with many top artists - like Linda Ronstadt, J. D. Souther, Bonnie Raitt and Cher. He met and worked with Waddy in the early 70’s and they continue to work together on various projects to this day - like Peter’s upcoming tribute album to Buddy Holly, featuring many artists singing Holly’s songs.
We all loved hearing that beautiful voice of his, and it was obvious he was having a great time being up on stage again. Deeeelightful!

Steve Ferrone is a well-known and well-respected session and live performance drummer. There doesn’t seem to be anything he can’t play along with, and he definitely rocked all of us Monday night on “Eight Miles High.” And check this out....... He’d never played that tune before, but with Waddy’s direction he kicked ass on it! A true professional for sure. Steve’s credentials include playing with The Average White Band, Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, Santana, and The StoneTemple Pilots.

Okay....... is that enough info for you...... making you glad you were there to experience it with us or sorry if you weren’t?

Review: Waddy Wachtel Band at The Joint 2/22/10

Note from Nina:

The Waddy Wachtel Band will NOT be at The Joint 3/1/10. Sorry.
We’re hoping for 3/8/10. I’ll let you know as soon as it’s confirmed.

I have to tell you that the Waddy Wachtel Band was fantastic last Monday night 2/22/10 at The Joint. As always. They never have a bad night. I’m so sorry those of you not in the area have to miss any of these gigs.

I tried to stay on my barstool since my back was still healing, and it worked for about 3 minutes. Then I was up and moving. Had to. And you know what? I was cured! There’s definitely magic in their music.

Some highlights.......

Waddy Wachtel’s guitar solos are always a total pleasure to hear, and his solos on “The Rover” and “Eight Miles High” took those tunes to a different level. Higher! It’s also a real treat to hear his vocals, and he brought back a song they haven’t done for a while “Johnny Strikes Up The Band,” a Warren Zevon tune they performed together. No one can put that electricity into those Zevon tunes like Waddy. I know Warren would be rockin’ along with us.

Phil Jones and Rick Rosas....... what can you say about those two incredible performers who have continued to blast out that great rock ‘n roll behind some of the best? We’re soooo lucky to have them wailing up there for us!

Jamie Savko has such a powerful perfect-pitched voice that it makes everyone in awe of his talent. Whether he’s singing lead or harmonies, everyone stands up and take notice. He definitely belongs up on that stage, and any band or performer would be enriched by his vocals.

Keith Allison continues to Rock, and he’s just as great now as he was when he was with the Raiders and doing his own solo projects. What a treat it was to hear him and Jamie harmonize on a new tune they’re doing “When Will I Be Loved.” Now! We all love them!

Joe Vitale, our special guest, sat in with the band on drums for a few tunes, and showed how his incredible chops make him able to sit on Phil’s throne - not an easy task - but one Joe definitely could accomplish. Joe is old friends with Waddy and Rick - having played on recordings, live gigs, and some tv shows with them in Joe Walsh’s band. Joe Vitale has been a pro for many years, and it was great to have him there.

Set List:
First set:
1. "All Down the Line" (The Rolling Stones) Jamie Savko and Waddy Wachtel vocals
2. “Supermassive Black Hole” (Muse) Jamie lead vocals; Waddy harmony vocals

4. “Shot Down in Flames” (AC/DC) - Jamie lead vocals
5. "The Rover" (Led Zeppelin) Jamie lead vocals
6. “When Will I Be Loved” (Everly Brothers) - Keith Allison and Jamie vocals
7. “The Shape I’m In” (The Band) Keith Allison lead vocals and rhythm guitar; Jamie and Waddy harmony vocals
8. “Cinnamon Girl” (Neil Young) - Jamie and Waddy vocals; Joe Vitale drums
9. "Jumpin' Jack Flash" (The Rolling Stones) Waddy lead vocals; Jamie harmony vocals; Joe Vitale

Second set:
1. “You Shook Me" (AC/DC) Jamie lead vocals; Waddy harmony vocals
2. "Eight Miles High" (The Byrds) Waddy and Jamie vocals
3. “Substitute” (The Who) Jamie lead vocals; Waddy harmony vocals
4. "Like a Rolling Stone" (Bob Dylan) Waddy lead vocals; Keith rhythm guitar; Joe Vitale drums; Phil Jones tambourines
5. “Dog Eat Dog” (AC/DC) Jamie lead vocals; Waddy harmony vocals
