Reviews and News - January 2008

Review: Waddy Wachtel Band at The Joint 1/7/08

I'm so sorry for being a bit late with this review. Forgive me? Even us rockers have hectic days sometimes, huh?

There was nothing hectic about Monday night at The Joint with the Waddy Wachtel Band - it was pure electricity. All the guys in the band dazzled us once again with incredible performances..... Actually, everyone kept saying (and I agree) that they were REALLY hot! Yeah! No one could stand still.

Most people in the audience also told me they didn't feel like 2008 had started until they got to rock n roll with WWB. Double Yeah's!

One thing that really stood out was how pure and clean the sound was. You could hear each instrument and all the vocals crystal clear, and Waddy Wachtel, Phil Jones, Rick Rosas, Brett Tuggle and Jamie Savko played and sang every note to perfection. With this band, there's never a need to cover up inadequate playing with lots of background noise.

Waddy plays straight ahead rock guitar, and watching his fingers on the strings makes it all seem so natural to him (it is!) and every note cuts right through. No need for loops, effects, echo or all that other stuff. He's sooo GOOD!

Phil and Rick get into a groove with each other on drums and bass that keeps everyone moving and happy. Listen to Brett's keyboard solos and you'd swear he's using some sort of sampled track - but NO... that's him playing every note. Jamie keeps hitting new levels with his vocals, and it's hard to believe any singer could sustain notes like he does.

Keith Allison is always fun to have up on that stage with the rest of the guys, and he treated us to a song we hadn't heard in a long time: "Just Like You." He used to play that song with Paul Revere and the Raiders, and he brought it out Monday night in honor of Paul Revere's birthday.

Barry Robinson (usually greeting folks at the door) got up on stage again this week to sing the low part on "Dirty Deeds." It was great! And special thanks to George Banacky for keeping the sound so clear and for the strobe lights during Brett's keyboard solo on "Won't Get Fooled Again."

As usual no one wanted the night to end......... I think we could have kept rockin' all night!!!!!!!!

Review: Waddy Wachtel Band at The Joint 1/14/08

Hi Rockers-

YES........ the Waddy Wachtel Band was fantastic last night 1/14 at The Joint! They never have a bad night. And neither do those of us who go there to hear them.

I thought I'd give you something different in this review instead of saying how great Waddy Wachtel, Phil Jones, Rick Rosas, Brett Tuggle and Jamie Savko are....... You all know that!

So, here are some other tidbits of info on their relationships to some of the bands whose songs they performed last night.

AC/DC - Brian Johnson came and sang a few songs with WWB at The Joint in 2004. You can watch a video of that at this page on YouTube. He was all smiles...... having an incredible time.

Rolling Stones - Keith Richards has sat in with WWB at The Joint in 2002, 2004 and 2005. He really enjoyed being up there with his old buddy Waddy. Waddy was in Keith's band the X-pensive winos, touring with them and playing guitar on several albums. Waddy also played guitar on the Rolling Stones album "Bridges to Babylon" and Ron Wood's album "1234".

Neil Young - Neil Young sat in with WWB at The Joint in 2005 too! Rick Rosas has toured and played on albums with Neil for many years, just recently returning from Neil's last tour.

Led Zeppelin - Yeah, you guessed it..... Robert Plant has sat in with WWB at The Joint. Jimmy Page showed up one night but didn't get up on stage - he just enjoyed listening to the band.

Warren Zevon - Most people know that Waddy met and started working with Warren in the 70's. They first worked together in the Everly Brothers band, then went on to collaborate on writing songs and making albums together, with Waddy doing much of the producing. They were close friends, and it's a shame Warren never got to come join WWB at The Joint.

Byrds - David Crosby and Waddy hooked up when Waddy first came to Los Angeles in the 70's.

Beatles - Waddy played guitar on Ringo Star's albums "Old Wave" and "Time Takes Time". When Brett started playing piano, his greatest influences were the Beatles and the Beach boys.

Set list:

1st Set:
"Live Wire" (AC/DC) Brett Tuggle lead vocals
"Bitch" (Stones) Jamie Savko lead vocals
"Shot Down in Flames" (AC/DC) Jamie lead vocals
"Cinnamon Girl" (Neil Young) Waddy Wachtel, Brett, Jamie harmony vocals
"Misty Mountain Hop" (Led Zep) Jamie lead vocals
"Stop Breakin' Down" (Robert Johnson) Keith Allison lead vocals
"Poor Poor Pitiful Me" (Warren Zevon) Keith lead vocals
"Eight Miles High" (Byrds) Jamie and Waddy vocals
"All the Way to Memphis" (Ian Hunter) Brett lead vocals

2nd set:
"Won't Get Fooled Again" (The Who) Jamie lead vocals
"Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap" (AC/DC) Jamie lead vocals
"Honky Tonk Woman" (Stones) Jamie lead vocals
"I Feel Fine" (Beatles) Waddy and Brett vocals
"All Down the Line" (Stones) Jamie lead vocals
"C'Mon Everybody" (Eddie Cochran) Keith lead vocals
"Till the End of the Day" (Kinks) Brett lead vocals
"Down Payment Blues" (AC/DC) Jamie lead vocals

Other notes:

Gary Simson and his crew were at The Joint last night filming more video for an upcoming documentary on the Waddy Wachtel Band. Gary has been putting together a video of WWB's gigs at The Joint, interviews with the band members and other bits and pieces. He interviewed a few of us fans last night as well. I'll let you know more about it as I find out.

Seth Winston (a long time fan and friend) won an Academy Award for his short film "Session Man" in 1991. Waddy produced some of the songs used in the film.

No gig next Monday 1/21 as Waddy's working on a new film score, but we'll all be back to heat up The Joint on 1/28. Hope to see you all there!

-Nina

Review: Waddy Wachtel Band at The Joint 1/28/08

Hey rockers-

I'm so sorry if it was cold where you were, but the Waddy Wachtel Band really heated up The Joint last night for all of us. Lots of dancers in the crowd - no one could keep their feet still from the beginning of the night till the end. What an amazing band - playing such exciting tunes. How lucky are we? VERY!

Some special highlights for me:

Waddy introduced a new song for the band, "Johnny Strikes up the Band" by Warren Zevon. It was especially touching since Warren's birthday was on January 24, and it was a great tribute to Waddy's dear friend who's truly missed. Waddy played such a warm tender guitar piece at the end that it touched everyone.

Besides his usual incredible guitar solos, I was blown away by the notes Waddy hit in his solo on "Trampled Underfoot". My mouth opens in amazement at how he grabs those notes out of the air and makes them work perfectly.

Phil Jones kept that big smile on his face as he whacked those skins and cymbals with lightning speed. Brett Tuggle definitely earned the name "Live Wire" - his vocals send electric currents through everyone, and his keyboard playing shows what a true talent he is. Rick Rosas plucks those bass strings with such ease - we'll miss him when he's off on his European tour with Neil Young from 2/15 to 3/15. Jamie Savko can melt your heart in one moment with his vocals, then make you want to jump up and do something naughty in the next moment - what true command he has of his voice.

Special guest - Blondie Chaplin (background singer for the Stones, among many other credits) stopped by and sang harmonies with the band on "Poor Poor Pitiful Me", "Bitch" and "Honky Tonk Woman". It was a treat having him up on that stage again with WWB.

Also, great harmonies/vocals from Barry Robinson "Dirty Deeds" and Dave Steele "Honky Tonk Woman".

Set List:

1st Set:
"Girl's Got Rhythm" (AC/DC) Jamie Savko lead vocals
"All Down the Line" (Stones) Jamie lead vocals

"Johnny Strikes up the Band" (Warren Zevon) Waddy lead vocals

"Poor Poor Pitiful Me" (Warren Zevon) Keith lead vocals
"Bitch" (Stones) Jamie Savko lead vocals
"I Am the Walrus" (Beatles) Brett Tuggle lead vocals

"Won't Get Fooled Again" (The Who) Jamie lead vocals
"Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap" (AC/DC) Jamie lead vocals

"Honky Tonk Woman" (Stones) Jamie lead vocals
"Live Wire" (AC/DC) Brett lead vocals
"Pump It Up" (Elvis Costello) Keith lead vocals
"Down Payment Blues" (AC/DC) Jamie lead vocals

No show next Monday 2/4 (poor poor us!), but the Waddy Wachtel Band will be back to rock us on 2/11. Can't wait! They'll be joined by Al Ortiz on bass, who sat in when Rick was away on the last leg of his tour with Neil Young. Al's a fabulous player, and he's been working with Stevie Nicks for many years.

Even though there won't be a gig next Monday, I'll put together some stuff about the band to post here anyway. It might help us get through the WWB withdrawal - at least for another week........... Until we Rock It again on Feb. 11!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks to all of you old and new friends who come to The Joint and make it even more fun. You Rock!

-Nina
