Review: Waddy Wachtel Band 1/25/14

Note from Nina:

We finally got to properly Rock in the New Year...... with the fantastic Waddy Wachtel Band at The Joint in Los Angeles on January 25. 2014!!!! Lots of very happy Rockers were in attendance - lovin' their WWB.

On stage all night were the incredibly talented Waddy Wachtel, Phil Jones and Rick Rosas. If you want to get energized and excited, they are ready to please..... They sure do!

That stage got filled up with with a bevy of exceptional performers. Our regulars Bernard Fowler, Brett Tuggle, Jamie Savko, Blondie Chaplin, Keith Allison, Ron Dziubla plus a special appearance by Danny Kortchmar got everyone rockin' through two great sets. Check the set lists below, imagine all those songs being played by these pros, and you know the night was spectacular.

We not only have to give applause to Waddy for keeping these shows going for almost 14 years now, for thrilling us all with his guitar playing and vocals, but also for adding some new songs. These guys can play anything! We got five new songs at the show WWB hadn't played for us before, in addition to the ones we love hearing over and over again by them.

Here's a recap of the new songs:

Danny Kortchmar took center stage to sing and play guitar on 2 songs he wrote that were big hits. "Dirty Laundry" was written by Don Henley and Danny Kortchmar and released on Henley's first album in 1982. "All She Wants To Do Is Dance" was written by Danny and released on Henley's 1984 album. Danny played guitar on both songs on the albums. Danny "Kootch" Kortchmar rocks! He and Waddy are close friends, and they've played together on records and tours for over 30 years. As Danny was about to leave after the first set, he unpacked his guitar and came back on stage in the second set to join in more fun. Cool! He'll be baaaack!!!

Waddy gave some very heartfelt words about the recent loss of his dear friend Phil Everly. It was a beautiful tribute to Phil, and WWB played three songs the Everly Brothers recorded. "When Will I Be Loved" was written by Phil Everly and released by the Everlys in 1960. Keith Allison did a great job on lead vocals. "So Sad (To Watch Good Love Go Bad)" 1960. Bernard Fowler and Blondie Chaplin nailed the vocal harmonies. "Love Hurts" was first recorded and released by the Everlys in 1960. Jamie Savko's vocals on that gave everyone tingles - so clear and crisp! Awesome!

Another new song they played which I hadn't heard before was AC/DC's "Bad Boy Boogie." WOW! With Waddy, Phil and Rick burnin' on that tune, Jamie was wailing on vocals! What a great song, performed impeccably.

Not new, but.......
In loving remembrance of Warren Zevon whose birthday was 1/24 WWB played “Poor Poor Pitiful Me" sung by Keith Allison and "Lawyers Guns and Money" sung by Blondie Chaplin. Waddy played guitar on both of those songs on the albums and live on tour with Warren. WWB always includes Warren's songs in their sets, and everyone loves them..... and Warren!

Brett Tuggle - amazing playing and harmonies all night. Plus his rockin' on "I Am The Walrus" - a favorite of everyone.

Ron Dziubla - sax solos extraordinaire!

Yes, yes........ All the songs played were fantastic! If you were there, you got rocked up real good! If you weren't there..... poor poor you!
