Review: Waddy Wachtel Band 5/25/12

Note from Nina:

The Waddy Wachtel Band was BURNIN' Friday night, May 25, 2012, at The Mint in Los Angeles! Those of us in the audience who were there felt the heat and loved every minute of that great Rock 'n' Roll. We know how lucky we are to get all that talent on stage - Rockin' It Up for us!

Waddy Wachtel has brought together a great band, and he knows about greatness..... He's played with some of the best performers in the world. You've gotta be great to keep up with the amazing Waddy! Phil Jones, Rick Rosas, Brett Tuggle and Jamie Savko are truly amazing. All you can do is gape in wonder at their extreme talent..... And feel all that excitement right along with them, while smiling and Rockin'!!!!

Jamie Savko kicked off the night with lead vocals on "Substitute." Jamie has a way of reaching notes that seem almost beyond the reach of human vocal chords. He takes a great song, makes it his own, and delights everyone - band and audience. Waddy and Brett sang vocal harmonies that sent chills!

The truly gifted Mindi Abair joined WWB on saxophone for the second song "Rip This Joint." She really rips any joint! It's always a special treat having Mindi come and play with WWB. And the girl can sing! Waddy first met Mindi when she was a background vocalist on tour with him in 1996 in Adam Sandler's Goat Band. And she can play sax? Damn! Beauty, talent and a true rocker!

Then Waddy thrilled everyone with his great lead vocals on "Live With Me." We were ready to do just that..... We'll be there, Waddy! Wherever he wants to take us, we're ready to go. Right? Right!

Jamie wailed on lead vocals to "Problem Child" then Brett took over for vocals on "I Can't Let Go," expressing our sentiments exactly. We were completely under his spell. With Waddy and Jamie's harmony vocals on that song, there was no way anyone listening could let go.

Waddy treated us to more of his vocals on "Lawyers, Guns and Money" - a song he played with Warren Zevon on his album and live on tour many times. We love it when Waddy gives us those great Warren songs..... and he kicks ass on them.

Our very special long-time guest Keith Allison took the mic for 2 songs in the first set: "Pump It Up" and "C'mon Everybody." He did pump us up and we were ready to c'mon! Keith was all smiles and showing what an exceptionally talented singer and guitarist he is. He told me he was especially happy that Mindi was up there blasting that sax with him on those songs.

Then Jamie shook the place on "Girl's Got Rhythm." I love that song, and Jamie with WWB took it to a whole new level. Got rhythm? We all got it!

A perfect ending to the first set was "I Am the Walrus." Brett wailed on keyboards while singing deeeelightful lead vocals. Waddy burned on his guitar solo, showing his amazing talent bending those strings and sending shivers down everyone's spines. Phil rocked the drums with some truly incredible drum fills. Rick came up front to pick on those bass strings so fast that his hands became a blur. We all were right there with them! Yes, more please!

Have I written too much already? It just feels sooooo good to relive the WWB experience again by writing about it, and sharing with those of you who couldn't be there how exciting it all was.

The second set was as great as the first. I won't go through each song, but you can read the set list below and imagine ...... how every one of them ROCKED!

Now, do yourself a favor and get to the next WWB gig at The Joint in Los Angeles on June 9. Details below. Waddy and Brett will be going on tour with Stevie Nicks in June, so that will be the last WWB concert for a couple of months.
