Review: Waddy Wachtel Band 11/30/13

A huge crowd of great Rockers came to The Joint Saturday night, November 30, 2013 to extend their Thanksgiving holiday with the Waddy Wachtel Band. It was definitely a fun and exciting Rockfest for all! We in the audience were thankful for WWB, and they were thankful for us. Perfect symbiosis!
The music was exceptional and all the guys in WWB were burnin' hot!

Before I tell you about all the fantastic singers and soloists who were up on that stage, we must give praise and credit to the two guys who have continuously been the backbone for all these years: Phil Jones on drums and Rick Rosas on bass. Phil has every beat down pat with a big smile on his face making it look easy. It's not! He's one of the best. Rick Rosas stands subtly at the back of the stage, but there's nothing subtle about the notes he pumps from those strings. With that solid structure - solid as a ROCK - the rest of the guys can weave their magic.

With that solid structure, Jamie Savko took the mic and began construction. As he wailed through his lead vocals on the first 3 songs of the night "Substitute," "The Ocean" and "Girl's Got Rhythm" he showed how his voice can lay down the floorboards and soar to the rafter beams. Beaming we all were! What a voice!

There were no snags as Jamie went right into "Bitch." It wasn't a bitch for him and Waddy to harmonize on all these tunes. And you can't really have "Bitch" without sax, can you? Ron Dzuibla polished the brass with his solos!

Let's take a little break from construction and wander into the field to enjoy..... Blondie Chaplin singing "Wild Honey." Sweet, sweet wild honey bee. Nice! Blondie continued by taking us on a ride with "Sail On Sailor." Blondie sang both of those songs on stage with the Beach Boys recently, and we can see why Brian Wilson chose him. Waddy told of how he first met Blondie - at a Beach Boys recording session in '68 or '69. He said they were both new to town youngsters and thrilled to be at the session. Blondie went on to sing "Sail On Sailor" on the BB's '73 album Holland, and Waddy played guitar at a BB's session in '95 as well as on Brian Wilson's "I Just Wasn't Made For These Times" cd and dvd in '95.

Back to our construction as Keith Allison checked in and checked out the shape of the building with "The Shape I'm In." We all were in great shape, and so was Keith! Keith then sang "Just Like Me," a song he played live with Paul Revere and the Raiders in the 60's. Keith was hammering in some very strong nails - his vocals and playing got us all rockin'!

Time for some windows...... Stained glass with rubies. Jaime and Waddy made everything sparkle with their vocal harmonies on "Ruby Tuesday." Gotta love the way they and WWB deliver that song. And the multi-talented Ron added delightful silver with his flute.

Do we need some walls now? Waddy was happy to oblige by singing "Johnny Strikes Up the Band." Waddy struck up not only the band but nailed the vocals and guitar. So solid and strong is our Waddy!

Let's go inside. Jamie sang "Hey Hey, My My [Into the Black]" as the last song of the first set. We willingly went into the black, and Jamie brightened the darkness with his fantastic vocals. Another friend joined the band for that song - Jason Sinay on guitar. Thanks for joining us, Jason!

Time for a short break. As Waddy said: "Get a drink and we'll be right back!" We said: "Yes, please!"

There were no women up on that stage assisting with the construction, but there were lots of us..... dancing. :-) So, the second set began with "All She Wants To Do Is Dance." Yup. We do!!! Especially to the great rock 'n' roll provided by WWB. The girls know. Jamie did a great job of vocals on this song, which was written by Waddy's dear friend Danny Kortchmar. It was a hit for Don Henley in 1984 from his Building the Perfect Beast album. Building! Waddy, Danny, Leland Sklar and Russ Kunkel played that song (among others) on November 9 in Vegas at the Rock 'n' Roll Fantasy Camp gig. Great song - done superbly by both bands!

Showing us what a beautiful structure they'd built, Waddy then blasted into "Live With Me." Oh yeah! We'll all come on in, Waddy! Everyone with big smiles. Love our Waddy!

Can we get higher? You bet! When Waddy and Jamie harmonize on "Eight Miles High" it's amazing. You really have to hear this. And Waddy's guitar solos - Wow! Killer!

From up on the roof, we can see down the highway. When Jamie sings "Highway To Hell" Bon Scott would be rockin'! The whole band was rockin' us down the highway.

Jason Sinay then took center stage and showed what a talented singer and musician he is with "Like a Hurricane." He and Waddy created a storm with their guitar solos. It was a good hurricane!

Blondie then gave a great rendition of "A Change Is Gonna Come." Everyone loves the way Blondie sings that, and backed by Waddy, Phil and Rick..... fantastic! We need some insurance on this structure, so Blondie wailed through "Lawyers Guns and Money," insuring that nothing could get in the way of our rockin'!

The women - so many of us at these shows - were then given credit when WWB turned up the honky tonk with "Honky Tonk Women." Yes, Jamie provided his great lead vocals with Waddy and Blondie chiming in on harmonies and Ron blasting on sax. All women were happy! So were he dudes!

Yes, we got another treat from Jason singing "Powderfinger." No need to worry about getting shot in here. The music keeps us safe.

WWB has created a great structure, and Waddy now gave credit to all the fantastic performers who joined WWB for the gig. Yay! Yes! And he always thanks everyone of you who come to these shows - you're the best!
So we end a perfect night with "Sin City." With all of us in here, WWB has created a whole city of Rockers! Verrrrry happy one and all!

Join us in giving thanks to the rest of the construction crew, who make these shows work so smoothly:
John Philbrick for keeping all those guitars tuned and amps up to snuff. Not only Waddy's numerous guitars, but those of Ron's, Keith's and Jason's as well. That's a lot of guitars, cords and amps.
Mark Nathanson for doing such a wonderful job of mixing the sound which was especially crisp tonight since he came in early and cleaned up the sound system.
Charlie McIntosh for keeping things running so smoothly at the door with a big smile.
Ondrea and Fernando for providing such a great venue, The Joint, for WWB to keep building R 'n' R in.
All the barmaids, crew and security guys at The Joint for their smiles and hospitality.

Don't forget the next WWB gig:
Saturday, December 21, 2013 - Holiday Bash

See you there and Keep Rockin'!!!
