Review: Waddy Wachtel Band 10/29/11

Note from Nina:

Did you have fun last night? All of us Rockin' It Up with the Waddy Wachtel Band at The Joint in Los Angeles sure did!!!!! What a great night of great music performed perfectly. That's what we always get from those fantastic guys up on that stage, and that's why we all keep coming back for MORE!

The night started with WWB wailing through "Immigrant Song" - not an easy tune to play live, but these guys can do anything. Yup. Jamie Savko's vocals sailed to those high notes crystal clear while Waddy Wachtel, Phil Jones, Rick Rosas and Robert Davis rocked through the changes in that tune with complete ease. They definitely got us rockin' then........

Bernard Fowler took the mic for the next song and sang what we were all feeling: "You Got Me Rockin'." It's always great having Bernard join WWB up there and thrill everyone with his masterful vocals and stage presence.

Next...... "I Can't Let Go" a song originally done by The Hollies in 1966. This was the first time WB played that song for us, and what a great addition to the set list!

A fun song for Halloween - Keith Allison sang "Werewolves of London" which was written by Warren Zevon, Waddy Wachtel and Leroy Marinell. They got us all singing "Ahhhooooo!"

Blondie Chaplin made it to the gig after returning from some concerts in Europe and soulfully sang "A Change Is Gonna Come" - everyone really likes hearing Blondie do that one. Great vocalist!

Waddy made it an even more perfect night by singing his own composition "High Maintenance Girlfriend." We're all so lucky to get to hear that song! And Waddy's vocals on "Mr. Tambourine Man" made us all feel like we were on that magic swirling ship. Ahhhhh!!!!! Guitar? Yes! Waddy's solo on "Eight Miles High" definitely gets everyone HIGH! What can you say about Waddy's guitar playing? Never enough. The man's a genius!

Robert Davis joined WWB for most of the songs on rhythm guitar, and he really rocked through them. You've gotta be good to get up on that stage with WWB, and Robert kicked ass! He also used an EBow on his guitar on "Heroes." If you don't know what that is: The EBow is a hand-held electronic bow for guitar. This small battery-powered unit replaces the pick in the right hand letting the guitarist mimic strings, horns, and woodwinds with unbelievable sensitivity.

No news on the next Waddy Wachtel Band gig yet. None in November, but I'm hoping for one in late December - a holiday show. Fingers crossed!
