Review: Waddy Wachtel Band at The Joint 9/8/08

Note from Nina:

Waddy Wachtel and the guys must have been storing up lots of energy during the 3 weeks they haven't been at The Joint on a Monday night, 'cause they really burned last night. Actually, they always BURN!!!! :-)

One thing that came to my mind when I was thinking about last night's gig was the wide variety of material they performed - and the different flavor of each singer's vocals and stage presence. The amazing and wonderful thing is that all the songs worked perfectly in sequence. What other band could do "Bitch", "A Change Is Gonna Come", "Somethin' Else" and "Just Like A Woman" in the same set and have them all sound fantastic? None other than the Waddy Wachtel Band. Lots of credit goes to the incredible talents of all the guys who play and sing those songs on Monday nights, and the thread that holds it all together and makes it rock the way it does is Waddy Wachtel. His electrifying guitar playing sails through the whole night and his arrangements are completely delightful. And he's brought together a great bunch of guys onto that little stage.

Phil Jones is a totally solid drummer. You never would have known he cracked a couple of ribs a few weeks ago. Nothing can stop him!

Jamie Savko is right there ready to sing anything - leads, harmonies, you name it. If he's not on stage for one of the songs, you can see him watching from the audience. A true music professional - and a dynamite voice!

Jason Sinay has been filling in for Brett Tuggle, who's touring with Lindsey Buckingham, and it's always a treat to have him up there with the guys. After Blondie Chaplin sang "A Change Is Gonna Come" in the second set, Jason said: "How do you follow that?" Then he thrilled everyone with "Powder Finger." Wonderful!

Al Ortiz flew in with just a few days notice from Arizona to fill in for Rick Rosas, who couldn't get away from rehearsals with Neil Young for his next tour. Al's been working with Stevie Nicks for several years - recording, touring, writing - and that's where Waddy found him. We're glad he did. Al's bass playing is like very welcome thunder!

Keith Allison will never stop rockin', and we hope he never does. His vocals, guitar and harp are as fresh and crisp as they were when he performed with Paul Revere and the Raiders. I told Keith I liked his version of "Poor Poor Pitiful Me" a lot - and he told me it's an arrangement based on the production Waddy did of the song for Jackson Browne and Bonnie Raitt on the Warren Zevon tribute album. Rock 'n' Roll Keith........ a special delight every time he gets up with the band.

Bernard Fowler and Blondie Chaplin....... It's kinda tough putting them both in the same sentence since their styles are different, but the Rolling Stones saw how incredible they both are as they've been using Bernard and Blondie as background singers for years. I heard the Stones might be putting out another album, and do another tour. For now, we're so very lucky to have both of them with the band. Well, they've both sang with the Waddy Wachtel Band at The Joint for many years.

Other news:

Watch for Brett Tuggle at a venue near you playing guitar, keyboards and bass with Lindsey Buckingham on tour now.

Rick Rosas will be back with us at The Joint next Monday 8/15. Well, that's what we know for now. Hopefully Neil Young will be able to do without him for a night. Watch for Rick on tour with Neil Young at a venue near you soon.

Gary Simson and his cameraman were shooting more videos last night of the band. We're hoping the Waddy Wachtel Band documentary will be finished and released soon.

Waddy has started the musical score for his next film. There will be lots of Waddy cues in it....... and it sounds like a fun project and movie.

The BEST news..........

Waddy, Phil, Rick, Jamie and Jason will be back at The Joint next Monday 9/17 and we'll also probably have Keith, Bernard and Blondie as well. A show not to miss!!!

Oh......... and big thanks to all of you from me and the guys in the band for showing up and dancin', rockin', smilin' and having such a good time. As Waddy says: Stay safe. We need you.

See you next week!
